Funeral Thank You Cards: What to Write and When to Send

H Memorials · Updated

A funeral thank you card is a short, sincere note to the people who helped: those who sent flowers or donations, brought food, served as pallbearers, spoke or sang, or traveled to be there. There is no strict deadline, and within a few weeks is the common ideal. Two or three sentences in your own words are enough. Below are wording examples you can borrow, and free cards, envelopes and address labels you can print.

Thank you card wording examples

For flowers

Thank you for the beautiful flowers you sent for Mom's service. They filled the chapel, and they would have made her smile.

For a donation

Thank you for your gift to the hospice in Dad's name. Knowing it will help another family means more than we can say.

For food

Thank you for the meals you brought this week. You fed us when we couldn't think about cooking, and we won't forget it.

For a pallbearer

Thank you for carrying Grandpa to his rest. He thought the world of you, and we were honored to have you beside him.

For someone who spoke or sang

Thank you for the words you shared at Aunt Rose's service. You reminded everyone of the person we loved.

For someone who traveled

Thank you for making the long trip to be with us. Having you there was a comfort we needed.

For a coworker or group

Thank you all for the card, the kind words and the time you gave us. Your support carried our family through a hard week.

A general card

The family of Margaret Doyle thanks you for your kindness, your prayers and your presence during this difficult time.

Sign with your name, or "The family of" and their name. Adding one specific detail, like the flowers or the dish they brought, makes the note feel personal.

Free printable thank you cards, envelopes and labels

Every memorial page on H Memorials includes a free thank you kit, made from the family's own guest book:

  • 5x7 thank you cards with their photo, name and years, and one message the family writes once, with room to sign by hand.
  • A7 envelopes with each guest's address and the family's return line.
  • Address labels on standard Avery 5160 sheets.
  • A "Thank-you sent" checkbox next to each guest, and an option to print only for the people not yet marked sent.

Guests choose whether to leave an address when they sign the guest book. It is never required, only the people managing the page see it, and it is deleted a year after the service.

Questions

Who should get a funeral thank you card?

People who sent flowers, made a donation, brought food, served as pallbearers, spoke, sang or read at the service, or helped in a personal way. Etiquette guides generally say a sympathy card without a personal note, an online condolence or attending the visitation does not require a written reply, though many families send one anyway.

How soon should I send funeral thank you cards?

There is no strict deadline. Within a few weeks is the common ideal, and a thank you sent later is still welcome. Grief takes time, and people understand.

Do funeral thank you cards have to be handwritten?

A handwritten note is traditional, but a printed card with one short personal line and your signature is widely accepted.

How do I get everyone's address?

On H Memorials, guests who sign the guest book can choose to leave a mailing address for a thank you card. The family sees it in their dashboard and can print address labels from it. Addresses are encrypted and deleted a year after the service.

The free page includes a guest book where guests can leave an address for a thank you card, and free printable 5x7 cards, A7 envelopes and Avery 5160 address labels.
